Both species differ from the remaining members of Cotinus in their less asymmetrical fruit, in the lack of elongate and plumose pedicels developing in the inflorescence, as well as in smaller leaves and fruits. It is concluded that C. carranzae and C. chiangii are possibly primitive members of the genus. In consequence, and considering their scarcity and ecological confinement, as well as the information obtained from the fossil record of Cotinus and from the distribution of its modern species, they are thought to represent relicts of Cenozoic paleofloras. |

Se describe como nueva a Cotinus carranzae, con base en materiales colectados en los taludes de la garganta del río Moctezuma en el estado de Querétaro. Se transfiere asimismo a Cotinus a la estrechamente relacionada Rhus chiangii Young, procedente del noreste de Durango. Ambas plantas difieren de los demás miembros conocidos del género en su fruto menos asimétrico, en no desarrollar pedicelos alargados y plumosos en la inflorescencia, así como en sus hojas y frutos más pequeños. Se concluye que C. carranzae y C. chiangii posiblemente son representantes primitivos del género. En tal virtud y tomando en cuenta su escasez y su confinamiento ecológico, en combinación con la información existente del registro fósil de Cotinus y de la distribución de las especies actuales del grupo, se les considera como probables reliquias de paleofloras cenozoicas.
