Por medio de un análisis filogenético utilizando cladogramas, se plantea una hipótesis preliminar sobre las relaciones filogenéticas entre el género Sorghastrum y géneros afines, así como las relaciones existentes entre las especies de este género. Además, con base en el análisis filogenético, así como patrones de distribución actuales y pasados, se hacen algunas consideraciones biogeográficas y se propone una hipótesis de trabajo explicando el posible lugar de origen del género.
