This is one of the richest faunas in Mesoamerica, only exceded by that of Costa Rica. Oaxaca was divided by other authors in 10 floristic regions . Amphibians and reptiles were analyzed following these subdivitions. It was found that the herpotofauna it with that pattern, because the similarity coefficients between regions are very low, so 10 herpetofaunistic regions are also recognized. The most diverse regions are the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca with 43 species of amphibians and 60 of reptiles, The Istmo de Tehuantepec having 27 species of amphibians and 106 of reptiles and the Sieira Madre del Sur with 24 species of amphibians and 49 of reptiles. The planicie costera del pacífico also contains an important number of species. Regions as the Valley of Tehuacán Cuicatlán Valley, Balsas Depression and the Central Valleys have been poorly, studied and our results on these regions are preliminary. Elevationally, the most diversified horpetofauna is between sea level and 1000 m. |

La herpetofauna de Oaxaca está compuesta por 40 familias 127 géneros y 359 especies (33% anfibios y 67% reptiles) Esta fauna comprende al 35.7% de la herpetofauna mexicana. Esta es una de las faunas más ricas de Mesoamérica, la que sólo es superada por la de Costa Rica. Oaxaca ha sido dividida por otros autores en 10 regiones o áreas fisiográfico-florísticas. Los anfibios y los reptiles se analizaron siguiendo esta misma rogionalización. Se encontró que la herpotofauna concuerda con el patrón antes señalado, ya que los coeficientes de similitud entre las regiones son nauy bajos, por lo que se pueden reconocer también, 10 regiones herpetofaunisticas. Las áreas o regiones más diversificadas son la Sierra Madre de Oaxaca con 43 especies de anfibios y 60 de reptiles, d Istmo de Teiniantcpec con 27 de anfibios y 106 de leptiles y la Sieira Madre del Sur r.on 24 de anfibios y 49 de reptiles. La Planicie Costera del Pacífico contiene también un número importante de especies. Regiones o áreas como el Valle de Tehuacán Cuicatlán, Depresión del Balsas y Valles Centrales se han estudiado pobremente, por lo que los resultados sobre las mismas son preliminares. Altitudinalmente la horpetofauna mas diversa se encuentra entie el nivel del mar y los 1000 m.
