En los últimos años los estudios sobre la diversidad edáfica han cobrado mayor importancia. En México, sin embargo, se han publicado muy pocos trabajos enfocados a este tama y casi siempre descontextualizados del entorno edáfico. Como producto de varias reuniones celebradas en los últimos años, se logró conjuntar a un grupo de especialistas para publicar una síntesis del conocimiento de algunos organismos de la biota edáfica de México. Esta selección tomó en cuenta aquellos grupos con un fuerte potencial de manejo o con una participación clave en los procesos edáficos. En este trabajo se revisan las contribuciones de este número especial, tomando como marco conceptual el proceso de la descomposición y los organismos involucrados.
