description | This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical strength and chemical composition of Trattinnickia rhoifolia (amescla), Parkia pendula (angelim), Erisma uncinatum (cedro), Apuleia leiocarpa (garapeira) and Mezilaurus itauba (itaúba) exposed to deterioration in field tests. To achieve this, wood samples were partially buried in outdoor and forest canopy, being exposed to deterioration for 360 days. The tests were carried out in the city of Sinop, state of Mato Grosso, Middle West of Brazil. Every 60 days, deteriorated wood was mechanically evaluated by the static bending tests, to obtain the modulus of elasticity and rupture, and hardness Rockwell. The chemical composition (extractives, ash, lignin, holocellulose and solubility in sodium hydroxide) were evaluated before and after the exposure to deterioration tests. Itaúba and garapeira wood presented lower change in mechanical resistance and chemical composition, in comparison to the other species, indicating a greater natural durability. |

Neste estudo objetivou-se avaliar a resistência mecânica e a composição química das madeiras de Trattinnickia rhoifolia (amescla), Parkia pendula (angelim), Erisma uncinatum (cedro), Apuleia leiocarpa (garapeira) e Mezilaurus itauba (itaúba) expostas à deterioração em ensaios de campo. Para tanto, amostras de madeira foram parcialmente enterradas em ambientes de campo aberto e floresta, sendo expostas à deterioração durante 360 dias. Os testes foram realizados na cidade de Sinop, estado de Mato Grosso, Região Centro Oeste do Brasil. A cada 60 dias realizou-se a caracterização das madeiras deterioradas por meio de ensaios de flexão estática, para obtenção dos módulos de elasticidade e de ruptura, e de dureza Rockwell. A caracterização química (teores de extrativos, cinzas, lignina, holocelulose e solubilidade em hidróxido de sódio) das madeiras foi realizada antes e depois da exposição aos ensaios de deterioração. As madeiras de itaúba e garapeira apresentaram menores alterações na resistência mecânica e na composição química, em comparação às demais espécies, indicando uma maior durabilidade natural.
