A brief description of the natural defense mechanisms of trees is presented. These mechanisms are activated by stimuli and attacks. During these processes, the production of chemical compounds (phytoalexins) is activated as a defense against pathogens. Tannins or vegetal polyphenols occur in high concentrations in the defense systems of living tissues, indicating that they could be effective preservatives. There are two kinds of tannins: condensed and hydrolizable. In this review paper, the formation of metal-tannin compounds, the synthesis of phytoalexins and a phenomenon know n among w ood chemists as derivation of wood, which refers to the chemical modification of wood, are described. A few figures are included to illustrate the structures of the chemical compounds. A mong the main advantages of the commercial formulation of wood preservatives based on tannins is the reduced environmental impact of their preparation and application, leading to greater safety for users. The potential social and economical implications of these products as substitutes for oilderivatives are highlighted. However, there are still many studies to be done before these products can be successfully applied in the field.

En este trabajo se exponen tres ideas para la aplicación de taninos contra posibles agentes destructores de madera. Se hace una descripción somera de los mecanismos naturales de defensa de los árboles con el fin de tratar de empezar a comprenderlos. Estos mecanismos ocurren como consecuencia de estímulos o ataques externos. Durante estos procesos se activa la producción de compuestos químicos (fitoalexinas) en defensa contra patógenos. En los sistemas de defensa de los tejidos vivos los taninos o polifenoles vegetales se encuentran en concentraciones importantes, de lo cuál se deriva la hipótesis de su empleo como posibles preservadores de madera. Existen dos clases de taninos: condensados e hidrolizables. En este trabajo de revisión bibliográfica se describe la formación de complejos metal-taninos la síntesis de fitoalexinas y un fenómeno conocido entre los químicos como derivación de la madera que se refiere a la modificación química de la misma. Se incluyen unas cuantas figuras para ilustrar mejor la estructura de los compuestos químicos. Entre las principales ventajas de la formulación comercial de preservadores a base de taninos, se encuentra el impacto ambiental reducido de la preparacion y empleo de estos compuestos, lo que redunda en mayor seguridad para el usuario. Las posibles implicaciones económicas y sociales de estos productos como sustitutos de los derivados del petróleo también son enfatizadas. Sin embargo, se señala que aún quedan muchos estudios por realizar antes de que estos preservadores puedan aplicarse exitosamente en el campo.
