As a consequence, this phenomenon has brought about a notorious reduction in both Mexican and world wide forest areas. This problem has also appeared in the Yucatán Península, one of the regions in México where these ecosystems can be found, especially the tropical rain forest. This paper presents figures for the Mexican rain forest areas, as well as deforestation rates, particularly in the three states of the Yucatán Península (Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán), from a national and international point of view. Deforestation causes are detailed. The fact is, however, that the results of the deforestation turn this problem into a national and overwhelming issue. Corrective actions that need to be put in place to address this problem include an efficient forest management plan that strives for the contribution of native dwellers that own the land and provide an excellent resource of traditional knowledge. This knowledge needs to be part of the current foresttechniques that are used in the national gavernmental programs of forest management. |

La deforestación es un fenómeno que se ha manifestado gradualmente y se ha agudizado en los últimos años, trayendo como consecuencia una reducción notable en la superficie de las selvas de México y del mundo. Este problema se ha hecho patente en la Península de Yucatán que es una de las regiones en donde se encuentra la selva mediana subperennifolia. Se presentan cifras de la superficie de México cubierta por los diversos tipos de selvas y las tasas de deforestación registradas en los últimos años, particularmente en la Península de Yucatán (estados de Campeche, Quintana Roo y Yucatán), en el marco de la problemática nacional y mundial. Se detallan las causas de la deforestación, cuyos resultados muestran cifras alarmantes que han rebasado las expectativas previstas. Se discuten las causas de la desaparición de estos ecosistemas y se analizan los retos para las actividades forestales, las que deben estar sujetas a planes de manejo forestal, en donde se tome en cuenta la participación directa de los campesinos poseedores del recurso, así como el valioso conocimiento tradicional que tienen de sus selvas, el cual debe integrarse a las técnicas silvícolas aplicadas en los programas gubernamentales de manejo forestal.
