description | The relationship between fruit size of Juniperus deppeana and damage caused by seed predator insects, in a forest fragment of Juniperus deppeana ( sabino), typical of the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico was analyzed. Female trees were selected to quantify fruit maturation. Their availability were classified into three categories: small (5 to 9 mm), medium (10-12 mm), and large (13 to 15 mm). At the same time, the amount and density of intact fruits and those presenting insect damage were quantified on five different samplings. Between 21-46 of the individuals presented fruits in 50 to 70% of the tree (by visual estimation). Also, categories of 5 to 30% of galbule abundance in the crowns were presented in 19 to 31 of the female individuals during the five different dates when the per cent quantifications were made. Female individuals produced fruits continuously from august 2004 to august 2005 . Although there was always a wide availability of large, medium, and small fruits, the first ones were the most damaged, since up to 30% of the fruits in that category presented exit holes caused by seedpredator insects. |

El siguiente trabajo documenta la relación entre el tamaño de los frutos (gálbulos) de Juniperus deppeana Steud. y el daño ocasionado por insectos depredadores de semillas en un fragmento de bosque de sabinos, característico del estado de Tlaxcala, México. En el estudio se seleccionaron árboles femeninos del sabino para cuantificar la maduración de los gálbulos y se clasificó la disponibilidad de éstos en tres categorías de tamaño: pequeños (5 a 9 mm), medianos (10 a 12 mm) y grandes (13 a 15 mm), cuantificando al mismo tiempo el número y la densidad de gálbulos intactos y aquellos que habían sido dañados por insectos, comparaciones que se realizaron durante cinco muestreos. La producción de gálbulos en J. deppeana fue continua durante las cinco fechas de colecta. Entre 21 a 46 de los individuos presentaron frutos en 50-70% del árbol (por estimación visual). También, las categorías de 5 a 30% de abundancia de gálbulos en las copas la presentaron entre 19 a 31 de los individuos femeninos de sabinos durante las cinco fechas de cuantificaciones porcentuales. Los sabinos hembras produjeron frutos continuamente de agosto de 2004 a agosto de 2005. Aunque hubo siempre una amplia disponibilidad de gálbulos grandes, pequeños y medianos, fueron los de mayor tamaño los más dañados por insectos, ya que hasta 30% de los frutos grandes presentaban orificios de salida de insectos depredadores de semillas.
