| Resumo: | Desmopsis trunciflora is recorded for the first time from the state of Jalisco, where it grows in the transition between montane cloud forest and tropical subdeciduous forest. A morphological comparison was done with D. mexicana R. E. Fries, the species most related with. A study of the species population structure and the community where it grows showed that out of 56 plots surveyed (0.1 ha each) along an altitudinal gradient ranging from 550 to 1,850 m, the species was present in only 11 at altitudes between 850 and 1,450 m. Desmopsis trunciflora is a typical shade-tolerant species coexisting in the understorey with a reverse J-shaped population structure. Presence of D. trunciflora is positively correlated with the percentage of rock cover and the superficial horizon depth of soil in the area, based on a Canonical Correspondence Analysis.
