En este trabajo se propone una clasificación taxonómica para el chayote, Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz, que incluye dos subespecies: S. edule ssp. edule y S. edule ssp. sylvestre. Adicionalmente, se documentan por primera vez poblaciones silvestres de la especie para los estados de Querétaro y Puebla, México, y se proporcionan datos sobre la distribución de todas las poblaciones similares hasta ahora registradas en el país.
