Con base en ejemplares colectados en el extremo NE del estado de Querétaro, se describe Velascoa recondita como género y especie nuevos. Se le considera como miembro de Crossosomataceae en función de su carácter de arbusto micrófilo y rupícola, de su flor con el gineceo de dos carpelos libres, así como de similitudes en las particularidades del fruto y de la semilla que está rodeada por un arilo fimbriado. Sin embargo, Velascoa discrepa de los demás componentes conocidos de esta familia en su hipantio alargado y tubular, en cuyo extremo distal se localiza un conjunto de 10 anteras casi sésiles, al igual que en la ausencia del disco nectarífero en la base del pistilo.
