Pohl (1980), Barkworth and Everett (1987) and Barkworth (1990) adopted a much broader interpretation of Nassella, one that would include many species traditionally placed in Stipa. Under this interpretation in Mexico exist eight species of Nassella, which are widely distributed in the country. In this paper the evidence supporting this expansion of Nassella is reviewed. Keys to genera and species are presented as well as a distribution map for its Mexican members. |

Nassella Desvaux es un género de la tribu Stipeae, descrito originalmente para especies de América Central y Sudamérica, que consiste de plantas con flósculos obovados, gibosos, con callo obtuso, lema no estriada con márgenes superpuestos y aristas fácilmente deciduas. Pohl (1980), Barkworth y Everett (1987) y Barkworth (1990) definieron un concepto más amplio de Nassella, incluyendo muchas especies tradicionalmente colocadas en Stipa. Bajo tal interpretación, en México existen ocho especies de Nassella, las cuales se distribuyen ampliamente en el país. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo comentar las evidencias que existen para apoyar la expansión de Nassella.
