Species diversity was compared for two different climatic seasons, the rainy and the dry, during 1970, 1983, 1984 and 1985.
Differences in the total number of species found in each climatic seasons were significant. The algal flora of Cozumel island is tropical and the greatest diversity was found in the rainy season.
Species diversity in relation to temperature, light, facies and tides is discussed. |

Se presentan los resultados del estudio de las algas marinas bénticas en aguas caribeñas de la isla Cozumel, Quintana Roo, México. La lista florística se acompaña de datos sobre la distribución de las especies, el estado reproductivo, el nivel de marea, las facies, el modo y el epifitismo. Se identificaron 22 especies de Cyanophyceae, 167 especies y 1 forma de Rhodophyceae, 35 espcies y 1 variedad de Phaeophyceae, 19 especies de Bacillariophyceae y 79 especies, 1 variedad y 9 formas de Chlorophyceae. Se comparó la diversidad de las especies entre la estación climática de lluvias y la de secas, durante 1970, 1983, 1984 y 1985. Existen diferencias significativas entre el número total de especies por estación climática. La ficoflora de la isla Cozumel es tropical y es más diversa en la estación climática de lluvias. Se discute la diversidad de las especies con relación a temperatura, luz, facies y mareas.
