Considering that the original area occupied by the scrubland has been reduced from 4000 to 1 24.5 ha, it is important to analyze the number and ¡dentity of the species that currently can be found in the area. In this work we report that the reserve has 301 species of angiosperms grouped in 61 families.Considering available floristic information of this cpmmunity, we estímate that the original number of species was approximately 350. Of this number it is still possible to find 226 species. This figure is higher than expected according to the empirical relation ofthetheoryof island biogeography. The sources of newly recorded species are discussed in the context of diaspore dispersión from adjacent oak forests and the introduction of propagules in the soil transported into the University gardens from other sites in the Distrito Federal. Local extinction of taxa is associated to urbanization and robbery of ornamental species, activities that have not ceased. |

La reserva del Pedregal de San Angel, localizada dentro de los terrenos de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y con un matorral xerófilo como tipo de vegetación, ha sido considerada como un sitio de alta riqueza florística desde el siglo pasado. Es de interés realizar una evaluación de su flora, dado que el área original del matorral ha sido reducida de 4000 a 1 24.5 ha. En ella se encuentran actualmente un total de 301 especies de angiospermas agrupadas en 61 familias. Con base en la información florística disponible se calcula que el número original de especies en la comunidad era de aproximadamente 350. De éstas en la actualidad aún existen en la reserva 226 originales, cifra mayor que la que se esperaría de acuerdo a la relación empírica de la teoría de biogeografía de islas.Se analizan las posibles fuentes de especies de los nuevos registros los cuales son asociados a la dispersión de diásporas de encinares aledaños a la reserva, así como a la introducción de propágulos en el suelo que se acarrea de diferentes partes del sur del Distrito Federal a los jardines de la Universidad.La extinción local de elementos está relacionada con la urbanización y el saqueo de especies, prácticas que ocurren actualmente.
