Three humocks and their associated inmersed areas were chosen around the Chunyaxché Lagoon, and soil samples from edaphic horizons and samples from the phreatic water were taken. Samples from continental and sea water were also taken.In water and soil samples, pH and concentration of four cations were determined in soils. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) made on the variables measured in soils showed no significant differences between the hummocks and their associated inmersed zones differ more from continental areas that between them. These result suggests that a direct continental  water source is not necessary to determine the presence of a hummonck. Thus, hummoncks could be considered as islets which are occupied by tropical evergreen seasonal forest and/or magrove species, according to the flooding condition in the islet.

Se ha propuesto que los petenes, presentes en zonas cársticas costerad de la Península de Yucatán, están alimentados por manantiales de agua dulce que provienen de corrientes subterráneas. Este trabajo puso a prueba dicha afirmación. En los alrededores de la laguna de Chunyaxché se eligieron tres petenes y sus zonas inundadas asociadas, de los que se tomaron muestras de agua del nivel freático. Adicionalmente, se tomaron muestras de agua continental y marina. Se determinó el pH y la concentración de cuatro cationes tanto de los suelos como de las aguas. En suelos también se determinó el nitrógeno, el fósfoto y el azufre totales. Un análisis de varianza multivariado (ANAVAM) aplicado a las diferentes variables medidad en los suelos indicó que no hay diferencias significativas entre los suelos de petenes y los de las zonas de hidrófitas asociadas. Para las variables medidas en el agua el ANAVAM indicó que las muestras de petenes y marismas difieren más de las de cenotes y pozos continentales que estre sí. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que no es necesario un aporte directo de agua continental para la formación de petenes, por lo que esto últimos podrían considerarse  com islotes que son ocupados por especies de selva mediana y/o manglar, de acuerdo al regimen de inundación del islote.
