description | Sexual dimorphism and reproductive cycle were studied in a population of Sceloporus horridus horridus from a tropical dry forest in central Mexico. Males with 90.66 mm (71.5-111.0 mm ± 12.79 mm) snouth vent-length were larger than 86.32 mm (71.0-101.0 ± 7.94) females. Reproductive activity is seasonal in both sexes and occurs in the period spring-summer as it has been observed in several oviparous species of tropical dry forest. The vitellogenesis occurs between March and April and the spermatogenesis from February to March. The ovulation occurs on late April and the eggs are in the oviducts between May-July. Mean eggs mass was 0.46 g (0.3-0.6) and meanclutch size was 15.3 eggs (10-20). Clutch size was related significantly to mass (r = 0.669) and physical condition of females (r = 0.676). The relative clutch mass value was 0.31 conforming to the strategies predicted for sit and wait species of lizards. The on set of reproductive activity in males was related with temperature (r = 0.508) and in females with precipitation (r = 0.775). Liver and fat body mass in males and females, showed an inverse relationship with the peaks of breeding activity. |

Se estudió el dimorfismo sexual y el ciclo de reproducción de una población de Sceloporus horridus horridus en un ambiente de selva baja caducifolia en el centro de México. Los machos con una longitud hocico-cloaca de 90.66 mm (71.5-111.0) son significativamente más grandes que las hembras con 86.32 mm (71.0-101.0). La actividad reproductora en ambos sexos es de tipo estacional y ocurre en el período primavera-verano como ha sido observado en varias especies de lagartijas ovíparas de ambientes de selva baja caducifolia. La vitelogénesis ocurre entre marzo y abril, y la espermatogénesis de febrero a marzo. Las hembras ovulan a fines de abril y tienen huevos en los oviductos de mayo a julio. El peso promedio de los huevos fue 0.46 g (0.3-0.6) y el tamaño promedio de la nidada 15.3 huevos (10-20). El tamaño de la nidada tuvo relación positiva con el peso (r = 0.669) y la condición física de lashembras (r = 0.676). La masa relativa de la nidada tuvo un valor de 0.31 y es congruente con las predicciones para especies que tienen una conducta de forrajeo pasivo. El inicio de la actividad reproductora, y los valores más altos en la masa testicular tuvieron una relación positiva con la temperatura (r = 0.508) y en las hembras la masa gonadal se relacionó positivamente con la precipitación (r = 0.775). La masa del hígado y cuerpo graso en hembras y machos, tuvieron una relación inversa con los picos de mayor actividad reproductora.
