El lobo mexicano (Canis lupus baileyi) es una subespecie amenazada de extinción, pero sólo recientemente se ha comenzado a reunir información acerca de su biología, ecología y comportamiento. Son escasos los datos sobre las temporadas de apareamiento y nacimientos, y no existe información sobre el tamaño de camadas y sobre su crecimiento. En el presente artículo se describen datos nuevos sobre los parámetros anteriormente mencionados, incluyendo su crecimiento hasta los tres meses de vida. La información proviene de la población de lobos cautivos del programa binacional de reproducción entre E.U.A. y México, así como de observaciones en dos diferentes grupos de lobos mexicanos que se han mantenido cautivos en un encierro de 1.5 ha en un bosque de encino-pino a 2500 msnm en la Reserva de la Bisofera "La Michilía" en la Sierra Madre Occidental en el Estado de Durango. La tasa de crecimiento observada se encuentra en los límites inferiores conocidos para el lobo gris [Canis lupus). Es necesario acumular mayor información de este depredador tan poco conocido en nuestro país.
