Owing to their low potential of demographic increase, black bear (Ursus amerieanus), sea otter (Enhydra futrís), river otter (Lutra longicaudis), kinkajou (Poto flavus) and jaguar (Panthera onca) are the most endangered carnivores. The suitability of the protectad areas of México to preserve mexican mammals is assessed considering their number, size and distribution all over the country. Oniy tree protected areas out of 80 have posibilities for conserving the jaguar and oniy one for the black bear. On the other hand oniy one of four endemic species have populations in a reserve. The futura for the majority of mexican carnivores is uncertain; oniy with a coordinate effort towards conservation and a more decisiva support to the existing protected areas it will be possible to improve the present situation. |

México es el país con más especies de mamíferos en América, sin embargo un número importante de estas especies enfrenta fuertes presiones por cacería, sobreexplotación y destrucción del habitat, las especies del orden Carnívora han sido especialmente afectadas por estos procesos. Con información referente de la historia natural de las 33 especies de carnívoros que se distribuyen en México se elaborarpn tablas de vida para la mayoría de esas especies. Debido a sus bajos potenciales de crecimiento demográfico, el oso negro (Ursus americanus), nutria marina (Enhydra lutris), nutria de río (Lutra longicaudis), martucha (Poto flavus) y jaguar (Panthera onca) resultan los carnívoros más vulnerables. Considerando el número, tamaño y distribución de las áreas protegidas de México se evalúa su capacidad para conservar los mamíferos mexicanos. De las 80 áreas protegidas formalmente establecidas sólo tres ofrecen posibilidades de conservación para el jaguar y una al oso negro; de las cuatro especies endémicas sólo una tiene poblaciones dentro de una reserva. El futuro de la mayoría de los carnívoros mexicanos es incierto; solo mediante un esfuerzo coordinado de conservación y apoyo más decidido a las áreas protegidas es posible mejorar esta perspectiva. los fenómenos demográficos y genéticos pueden ser relevantes en la desaparición de especies con poblaciones aisladas o muy mermadas, pero por el momento las causas involucradas en la desaparición de los carnívoros mexicanos son de naturaleza extrínseca.
